Long Time No Blog!

I had been away for quite some time... I've always said that I can't live without Internet and yes, 1+ month with no Internet wasn't fun at all! And it's just amazing how much stuff you could miss in that short period of time.

I saw Cut Copy in Jakarta on July 10! It's only my 2nd gig of the year, yeah, pathetic I know. Anyway, they were AMAZING. They played all my favourites, but they skipped 'Saturday's *boo* Which was pretty ironic considering the gig was on a Saturday night! They revealed that they're gonna release their 3rd album next year, and they also played 3 songs that could possibly end up in that album!

One of the *important* things I missed while I was gone - the video of Brandon Flowers' debut single, Crossfire.

Brandon Flowers AND Charlize Theron in one video. Hmmmm... sexxxay. I gotta say though, I find the video rather hilarious. Charlize does all the butt-kicking and BFlow is the one getting saved. But I'm not so surprised though, BFlow is known to be a bit of a diva after all :P

My favourite French electro duo Justice are back in the studio! inthemix.com.au has confirmed that they are going to release their long-awaited 2nd album next year. It was also rumoured that they are planning to perform in Australia on New Years! If this is true, we might be able to get a sneak preview of the 2nd album! I hope it will be as good as (or even better than) their 1st album *fingers 'cross'ed!*.

DIY Band Merch

I always try to support my favourite bands by buying their records and their merch. But most of the times band merch are 1) overpriced and/or 2) dull. So what I usually do is I make my OWN band merch. (I have no intention of getting sued by the respective bands, therefore I must stress EVERYTHING THAT I'VE EVER MADE, WHETHER IT'S FOR MYSELF OR FOR OTHERS, IS STRICTLY FOR PERSONAL USE.)

Last year when I was in the UK, I bought a pair of white canvas high-tops from H&M for £8, and a pack of multicoloured Sharpies for £12. At that time I was pretty much in love with the artworks done by a Finnish/British artist Sanna Annukka for Keane's second album Under The Iron Sea. So what I did was I drew some of the artworks on those high-tops, et voila! KEANE SHOES!

Earlier this year I purchased a pair of white double-tongue Converses for $25, and a box of Pentel Fabric Fun pastel dye sticks for a mere $2! I recreated the cover artwork for Muse's The Resistance on the left shoe and the cover artwork for Keane's Under The Iron Sea (again) on the right shoe.

World Cup? Bah.

While everyone is watching Portugal vs Cote d'Ivoire, I'm sat here in front of my laptop, eyes glued to keanemusic.com's live blog from Camden's Roundhouse.

So what's exciting in the world of music today? My answer would be Mt. Desolation and Brandon Flowers.

Mt. Desolation is a side project of Keane members Tim Rice-Oxley and Jesse Quin (who is actually not an *official* member, but I don't really care because I love him to bits and pieces). According to their official website/blog, they are an alt-country band, which features a list of amazing talents such as John Roderick, Tom Hobden of Noah and the Whale, and even Ronnie Vannucci Jr. of The Killers! They recently played their first ever gig at the Luminaire in London. They played 11 (?) songs, all of which had never been heard by anyone before! Just a few days after, they posted a thank you note on their website, along with a link to a free download for their song "State Of Our Affairs".

Brandon Flowers. Sounds familiar? He's the voice and the brains of The Killers. After they announced their 'indefinite hiatus', Brandon quickly took over the spotlight by letting the world know that he is going solo. No, The Killers have not disbanded, it's just a side project - much like Mt. Desolation - Brandon started to keep himself busy during his band's hiatus. His upcoming album is called Flamingo, and it features Stuart Price and Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley. Head over to Brandon Flowers' official website to listen to "Crossfire".

According to a fan who's been to a recent Keane gig, Tim Rice-Oxley said that Mt. Desolation's upcoming album will be released this September. No definite date has been given for Flamingo's release yet. I think I read on YouTube someone said that it will be released later this month (which is highly unlikely if you ask me!), while a friend of mine (who is a huge Brandon Flowers fan) told me a September release is possible.

First!

Hello and welcome to Socks And A Phone!

This blog is named after a line from the song Map Of Your Head by the British band Muse, which - in my humblest opinion - is the best line Matthew Bellamy has ever written!

I will post stuff I like, e.g. the latest news from my favourite bands/artists, graphic t-shirts (pic, where to get them, price), design stuff, and random finds from around the Internet.

Over on the right hand side of this page you can find a short biog of myself, along with links to my last.fm profile and my flickr page.

To start off, here's the song Map Of Your Head for those who haven't heard it yet!

Cheers!
